four square Old south

Project Vision

Overgrown mature evergreens and a narrow, irregular flagstone walkway from the front entrance to the street were doing little to showcase this beautiful home. Grading was also a key issue with surface drainage on the lawn gravitating toward the house foundation where the soil had settled over time. This family envisioned a harmonious blend with the home’s historical character.

Dedicated to enhance their home's appeal, this family took on the task of removals themselves, opting to handle the installation of the new lawn and planting as well. With meticulous care, they adjusted the yard's grading to ensure proper drainage away from the foundation in the native clay soil.

The landscape design employed symmetry, mirroring the balanced layout of their home. The plan widened the walkway, allowing for comfortable side-by-side strolls to the front door.

Employing a timeless blend of warm and dark tones, the square-cut paving slabs were chosen with a striking dark soldier's course to draw attention to the entrance. This design echoes the elegance of the black entrance doors and sidelights, creating a cohesive and inviting greeting area at the foot of the steps.

In crafting the softscape, the landscape design meticulously layered plants reminiscent of the heritage era of their home. Concealing the bulky air conditioning unit along the side required ingenuity, leading to the construction of a wooden screen. Additionally, they installed a stone mowing edge to provide a clean and defined border, simplifying lawn maintenance tasks.
