project vision

The primary goals for this busy couple were to enhance property functionality and design low-maintenance landscaping to soften the existing deck and concrete. Amidst a row of similar-looking houses, they wanted their home to stand out while remaining easy to maintain. Addressing concerns, they sought to widen the narrow front driveway to accommodate two cars side by side and resolve issues with poor lawn growth along the foundation. In the backyard, where a deck, concrete patio, and shed already existed, they looked to create privacy, maintain some lawn for their family pet, and soften the hard surfaces with strategic planting.

design

The landscape design proposed the installation of a new sidewalk in the front yard with a matching border on the opposite side of the driveway. To enhance the narrow front yard, a row of columnar deciduous trees were planted with a simple underplanting, tailored to thrive in the western exposure.

In the backyard, new columnar trees screen views, accompanied by climbing vines. Climbing vines were also positioned along the opposite side, destined to cover the wood fence over time. A linear planting of an evergreen hedge, ornamental grasses, and spring-flowering perennials served to delineate the space between the existing deck and shed. Shielded by mature deciduous trees on the neighboring property, the rear chain-link fence was screened with shade-loving flowering deciduous shrubs and Hostas, preserving views of the neighbor’s Cedar hedge.
