classic back split

Project Vision

This classic back-split in a north-end community was charming and had an awkward front entrance with a step right at the door at the end of a covered area. The clients wanted the recessed front door to be welcoming and the gardens to have classic elements with some favourite cottage garden plants such as Boxwood, Hydrangea, and Lavender.

front garden DESIGN

A new paving stone slab sidewalk with a step at the face of the house instead of at the door has transformed this into a pleasing entrance. The driveway has been replaced with a gray-tinted concrete that hides tire marks.

The blend of formal and cottage garden planting design showcases layers of evergreen that hide the foundation, flowering shrubs, and perennials chosen for fragrance and texture.

The renovated landscape has grounded and elevated this charming home.

Back garden design

Three years later, the backyard was designed with a focus on creating a welcoming entrance from the gate, a large entertaining area to accommodate family gatherings in one place compared to their existing deck and patio that required people to dine or gather in groups apart from one another.

Other items on the wish list were privacy planting that creates a sense of enclosure, some lawn for grandchildren, and planting beds full of blooms where the homeowners could putter happily.

An extensive patio wraps around the corner of the house with a concealed dedicated BBQ area and with steps down to the lawn and garden providing ample space for the entire family to gather.

A new wood fence and Cedar hedge will grow up to provide additional privacy over time. Plants from the front garden have been repeated in the back. Many varieties of their favourite Hydrangeas have been incorporated with Boxwood, Lavender, Black-Eyed Susans, flowering vines, and other long-blooming perennials to fashion a warm and welcoming garden that is perfect for puttering in.
